WHAT IS AN ORTHOCERAS FOSSIL?

Orthoceras fossil is the  fossilised remains of extinct marine life that belongs to the nautiloid cephalopod group. The 400 million year old ancestor to squid/octopuses lived during the Ordovician to Triassic periods.

This animal had a long straight conical shell and a soft inner body, the word Othoceras comes from the Greek word for Straight Horn referencing their shell shape.

HOW ARE THEY CREATED?

Upon their unfortunate death Othoceras would sink to the ocean floor, their soft body decaying over time and the shell remaining. Over millions of years sediment covers the shell, minerals work their way into the shell and turn it to stone.  Then over 400million years later geological shifts cause the surface of the earth to shift uncovering these amazing fossils.
